Rheinberger Chamber Choir History
The Rheinberger Chamber Choir was established in January 2003 by Richter Grimbeek and in 2012 Gert Pottas took over. The choir is an adult choir with singers from the East Rand, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The mission of the choir is to make a contribution towards the cultural development and enrichment of the community by means of choral singing and aims to study music of high artistic value.
In August 2003 they performed the Faure Requiem in the Voortrekker Monument together with the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa (COSA). During December 2009 a program for TV2 – “Carols by Candlelight” was produced.
Gloria // Requiem
The Rheinberger Chamber Choir commissioned the SA composer Hester Eigner van der Westhuizen for the “Requiem – for crime and violence in South Africa” as a cultural contribution against crime. It was performed together with the East Rand Youth Choir and a symphonic ensemble in the Voortrekker Monument in August 2007. The choir’s first CD was released on 21 September 2007 in the Diaz Museum in Mossel Bay.
A commissioned work “Gloria” by the composer Hester Eigner van der Westhuizen was performed in the Voortrekker Monument in August 2008 and in August 2011 the choir performed the Mozart Requiem in the Voortrekker Monument.
Joe Niemand & Animato
In March 2012 the Chamber Choir was invited together with the 4 other choirs to join the big Gospel Show of Joe Niemand in the Coco-Cola Dome in Johannesburg. A DVD about the show was launched in July 2012. The conductor was invited to continue with his studies in Austria and the choir greeted him after a big farewell concert in June 2012 in the ZK Mathew Hall as Unisa in Pretoria. Gert Pottas took over the direction of the Rheinberger Chamber Choir in August 2012.
September 2014 brought the choir to the ATKV Animato Final in Cape Town and the choir was announced as winners of the category “Kamerkore” and also won the prize for best performance of a Western piece.
2015 - 2019
In 2015 the choir produced the CD: “Prayer” which features various pieces by Western- and South African composers. In 2018 the choir celebrated its 15 year anniversary and took part in the World Choir Games held in Pretoria, where they attained Gold and placed 3rd overall in the category “Chamber Choirs”.
During April 2019 the choir performed the Breath of Ecstasy by the American Composer Michael John Trotta with an ensemble. The choir took part in the Cantamus National Choir Festival and Competition in George during August 2019 and was announced as winners of the category: “Chamber Choirs”.
